With the county’s budget in a bind, 30 employees affiliated with the Service Employees Union International will be laid off this week, and the union now suspects that 12 more could face that same fate next week. Almost 2,400 people work for the county, but union leaders claim that the layoffs are focused on low-level employees, while management level positions are largely untouched. The ratio of managers to employees is currently one to 5.16, which they claim is too high. “The ratio is going in the wrong direction,” said an organizer with SEIU Local 521.
