Like the old adage, the best things in life are free, Santa Cruz in the summer has a lot to offer those who want to save a bit of dough. While locals inwardly wish for rain during these drought-laden times, the weather is ridiculously gorgeous, warm and bright offering a perfect setting for long stays on the beach and twilight walks along West Cliff Drive. State parks, entertainment venues and even local businesses  host an assortment of free activities for families and people of all ages throughout the summer. Whether it is watching a movie outdoors underneath the stars, hiking through the majestic Santa Cruz redwoods or grabbing a few friends to attend any of the free arts and music festivals happening throughout the summer, Santa Cruz is the place to be for inexpensive – or free – activities for the entire family to enjoy.   • Friday Night Bands on the Beach

    Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

    Every summer, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk hosts live music on the world famous beach bandstand. This summer, Friday Night Bands on the Beach bring hit makers such as Y&T, Wang Chung and Smash Mouth to Santa Cruz. Bands play two free shows each Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the beach bandstand until September 4. Free movies on the beach start up on Thursday, July 24. Each week starting at sunset, a classic film is played right on the beach! Bring lawn chairs and blankets for a series of summer entertainment that is not to be missed.

  • Movies at the Mission

    Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park

    Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park is the picturesque setting of choice for many community events throughout the year. This summer, the park hosts free outdoor movies on its grounds. Catch the next showing, Disney's The Gnome-Mobile on Saturday, August 22. Part of the film was shot at Big Basin. Doors open at 7 p.m. Film starts at sunset.

  • Surfing

    Santa Cruz

    A world-renowned location for surfing that draws some of the most recognized names in the sport, Santa Cruz is a jewel box of famous surfing locations. From beginner to seasoned athlete, the wide range of beaches provide waves applicable to every person’s level of surfing experience. Paddle out to the beginner’s Cowell’s Beach— neighboring the Boardwalk— for some small waves, or try your luck at Pleasure Point or Steamer’s Lane for a more advanced surfing experience.

    Downtown Santa Cruz

    Downtown Santa Cruz is transformed into a walking art gallery, full of art exhibits hosted by local merchants, every First Friday. First Fridays serve as a way for local artists to showcase their work, and promote a cultural environment. Many stops on the tour provide drinks and nibbles to nosh on while checking out the local artwork. While not exactly free, Third Saturdays at Santa Cruz MAH feature live performances, interactive displays and engaging workshops to connect diverse local organizations with members of the community. Many are relatively off the grid, but finding their trailheads proves a worthwhile venture. Almost nowhere can you find such a diverse collection of hiking trails suited for those of all ages and abilities.
