About Zakir Hussain & Rahul Sharma

Master musicians Zakir Hussain and Rahul Sharma conjure up a magical sound whenever and wherever they perform. The intrepid duo has been teaming up for concerts since recording their debut CD Rhythm of Love in 2010. Hussain's expressive tabla drumming matched with Sharma's virtuosic command of the santoor (a Kashmiri instrument similar to the hammer dulcimer) makes for a stunning combination of improvisational talent. Even though the santoor and tabla drums are normally associated with classical Indian music, Rahul and Zakir are renowned for pioneering the use of their respective instruments in contemporary formats. Hussain, the son of legendary tabla master Alla Rakha, is well-known for promoting the concept of “world music” and encouraging musical projects across cultural boundaries. Some of his more popular collaborations include percussionist Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, guitarist John McLaughlin of Shakti and saxophone great Charles Lloyd. Sharma, the son of Indian musician Shivkumar Sharma (who brought the almost forgotten santoor to prominence in Indian music of the '50s), continues to champion the santoor's creative versatility in the 21st Century with a prolific output that includes over sixty albums and movie soundtracks.
