About Tinariwen

“…almost as cathartic as loud rock music while being entirely unlike it.” – The New Yorker

Starkness, severity, beauty, and trance-inducing vistas. These descriptors could be used to illustrate both the music of Tuareg band Tinariwen and the Saharan Desert they call home. The Tuareg, a nomadic people, have become known for their droning, Arabic blues, propelled by handclap rhythms and repeated chants. Due to political turmoil in their home of Mali, their latest album, Emmaar, was recorded in Joshua Tree, California. The album finds the band perfecting their unique style of African blues, the music taking on an organic feel brought on by the mood and desert landscape of the Mojave.
