About The Santa Cruz Chorale presents Stravinsky’s MASS

The main work of the Santa Cruz Chorale’s June concert is Igor Stravinsky’s Mass for Mixed Chorus and Double Wind Quintet, composed in 1948. It is one of Stravinsky’s very few compositions that were not commissioned. This is to say that he wrote it not from need, but because the idea was close to his heart. Although the Mass is decidedly “modern,” its debt to tradition can be heard not only in Gregorian reminiscences, but in the wind instrument accompaniment. The Chorale’s program will also feature motets from that earlier period by Giovanni Gabrieli, Jacobus Gallus and Ludovico Viadana, among others, many using double and triple choirs, offering an exciting contrast to the sounds of the Stravinsky Mass.
