About Santa Cruz Zine Fest 2019
The Santa Cruz Zine Fest is coming back this November 16th and the Resource Center for Nonviolence is hosting it. The event will congregate a talented group of zinesters from the Monterey Bay, Easyt Bay and South Bay areas, and from other cities throughout California. The event’s purpose this year is to celebrate the way that zines can be used as powerful tools to fuel political struggles, liberation, and resistance to oppression on both the grand political scale and in personal experiences. Hence, it will exalt especially the work of marginalized voices, including but not limited to BIPOC, Queer/Trans/Genderqueer/LGTB+, and disabled artists.
The event will include tables and exhibitions, a DYIIY lounge area, workshops –including an introductory one for children –and talks from special guests. The closing activity will be the “Personal Narratives and Political Writing” panel, where a group of zinesters from different backgrounds will discuss the internal logic andir thought processes behind the creation of personal narratives for addressing social and political issues.
People of all ages will be welcome at this free event. Some local organizations and collectives collaborating and sponsoring are The Fabrica, Subrosa Community Space, Little Giant Collective, students from UCSC students, KCZSC, Community Printers, and Staff of Life, among many others. P.O.P. (Print Organized Protest) collective will hold a live printing workshop to celebrate social change and struggle.
The doors will open at 11:00am and close at 5:00pm. Pana Foodtruck will be offering a vegetarian menu to the public, so no one has to leave because of a grouchy stomach. All fans of the zine world are invited to join the party and take advantage of this opportunity to meet in person the talents behind these publications. We are still looking for volunteers to support the organizing on the day of the event!
