MARINE CONSERVATION HISTORY IN CALIFORNIA: Save Our Shores features acclaimed environmental journalist, David Helvarg
---Free food + drinks + music for all!---
DAVID HELVARG, Executive Director of Blue Frontier, is set to share the history and culture of California’s coastline during Save Our Shores popular Sanctuary Speaker Series this December. David will pull from his book, The Golden Shore – California’s Love Affair with the Sea, to examine how the Pacific has come to define California’s economy, lifestyle and adventurous culture.
Topics will range from how California’s growth as a maritime power from Paleo-Indians trading in the Channel Islands to the development of America’s largest (and greenest) ports helped shape the world’s 6th largest economy. This includes the role of the Navy, the Gold Rush, Santa Cruz surfers, and the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Guests are encouraged to engage in discussion about California’s rich coastal history and the importance of preserving its precious marine habitats.
**Remember to BYO cup and plate for our complimentary food and beverages from Pizza My Heart and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery! Bring your ears for soothing tunes from the Wave Tones!

FROM THE SPEAKER
“While overfishing, pollution, loss of habitat and climate change threaten the very survival of most of our blue planet and ocean-dependent economies, California provides a model for how we might turn the tide and live well with our coasts, ocean and communities, both human and wild, that depend on them.” - David Helvarg, Founder and Executive Director of Blue Frontier
