About Public Talks By a Buddhist Master

Join us for a series of weekly talks covering a wide range of topics that can help us live our lives in a happier and more peaceful way.

Oct 16 – The Buddhist Path and Meditation
Ever wonder how the Buddhist masters achieved a calm, peaceful state of mind? Geshe Sangye will introduce some of the methods taught by Buddha Shakyamuni over 2500 years ago to help us integrate our modern ideas around meditation with this ancient wisdom. You will also hear about different types of meditation that are available to you and how to do them, which will bring tranquility and happiness into your daily life along the way.

Oct 23 – Mind Training and Dealing with Anger
Anger, we all have it! When problems arise in our lives, we tend to lose our way, and our spiritual path vanishes. Join us for a session with Geshe Sangye as he helps us to identify the antidote to this powerful emotion, as well as some practical methods to train our minds toward more positive qualities.

Oct 30 – Three Principle Aspects of the Path
The three main qualities we need to focus on if we want to progress along the Buddhist path: renunciation, bodhicitta, and emptiness. Without renunciation, we are not able to cut through the attachment which binds us to a life of problems and suffering. If we have bodhicitta, everything we do becomes a cause of Buddhahood for the sake of all others. Without understanding emptiness, we won’t be able to cut through the ignorance of the true nature of reality which is the very root of life characterized by perpetual suffering

Nov 6 – Songs of Milerapa
The Tibetan Yogi Milarepa is a real success story. He was someone who started out going down a very bad, and yet was able turn his life around and achieve Buddhahood in one lifetime. He composed profoundly amazing poetry which can inspire us. Geshe Sangye will introduce us to these spontaneously composed verses—

November 13 - Topic TBA

Our teacher for these classes is Geshe Ngawang Sangye, a Lharampa geshe (equivalent to a Ph.D. degree in western education) and is one of the leading teachers at Sera Je Monastery. His way of teaching is always very animated. He sparkles. He’s scintillating. He’s very good. He’s very learned and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is very fond of him.
