About Prayaas: An Endeavor in Kathak

Prayaas, which literally translates to 'attempt' or 'endeavor,' represents Bhardwaj's attempt to carry forward the tradition of Kathak after the passing of her Guru, Pandit Chitresh Das, earlier this year. Lightning footwork, swift pirouettes, dramatic story-telling, and a mellifluous voice are the trademarks of any performance by Bhardwaj. With Prayaas, she shares the stories and dances from her Guru's life, and how they inspired her to become the artist that she is. She continues to teach, and brings to the stage the next generation of young dancers she is currently training. Finally, Bhardwaj concludes with a new creation of hers, inspired by ghazal (songs of unrequited love) and Sufi music.

Alongside Bhardwaj is an all-star accompaniment featuring Salar Nader on tabla, Pankaj Mishra on sarangi, Ben Kunin on sarod, and her Guru-sister, Farah Yasmeen Shaikh on recitation & manjira.

Audiences were absolutely mesmerized by Antara and her musicians two summers ago during the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival. This time they perform in a space large enough to fit the appreciative audience, and they will not be constrained by the time limitations of the festival. The level of excellence and world-class caliber of the performers will make for a night you will not forget!
