About Operetta: Orpheus in the Underworld

Professor Bruce Kiesling conducts student singers and the UCSC Orchestra in Jacques Offenbach's hilarious operetta, sung in English. With the original libretto by Ludovic Halévy, the story irreverently parodies the Greek myth of Orpheus and Euridice, turning the original tragedy into a tale of bickering spouses, and features such tunes as "Infernal Galop," recognized today as "The Can-Can." Sheila Willey directs Donald Pippin's translation courtesy of San Francisco's Pocket Opera.
