About Naturalist Night: California Dinosaurs

Get ready for our next Naturalist Night, California Dinosaurs: Life on the Edge (of Mesozoic North America)! This popular monthly lecture series features a special guest speaker and topics vary widely. This month, we go Mesozoic!

Dinosaur fossils are few and far between in California, but their importance to ‘dinosaurology’ far outweighs their numbers. This talk from Dr. Hilde Schwartz will focus on the types of dinosaurs that inhabited California, the environments in which they lived and died, why they are rare, and what we’ve learned from their remains. We will also discuss California’s recently-anointed state dinosaur: Augustynolophus morrisi!

Dr. Schwartz is a lecturer in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UC Santa Cruz. She teaches field geology and paleontology courses, and has been studying fossils — including dinosaur remains — since 1978.
