About Memory & Meaning | Cabrillo Festival Orchestra Concert

Tonight Marin Alsop introduces us to Brazilian composer Marlos Nobre through his work Kabbalah, based on the numerology of an ancient mystical Jewish tradition. Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Oceana marries texts by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda with Bach-infused music for orchestra, a large chorus, and soloists. Special guests include San Jose-based The Choral Project (under the direction of Artistic Director Daniel Hughes), vocalist Alicia Olatuja; Los Angeles Duo (guitarists Donovan Butez and Bryan Fasola); and a boy soprano. John Corigliano’s stirring Symphony No. 1 was penned as an impassioned response to the AIDS crisis. With this final concert of her farewell season, Alsop invites the audience to join in a collective moment of reflection, remembrance, and celebration.
