About La Virgen del Tepeyac Mission Performance

A family holiday tradition first performed inside the Mission San Juan Bautista in 1971 by El Teatro Campesino (The Farmworkers Theater) is filled with vibrant color, live music, drama and Aztec dance. The show is a joyful reenactment of the four (4) apparitions of our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531. Performed in Spanish, an English synopsis is included in the show program.
The play is an adaptation by ETC Founding Artistic Director, playwright Luis Valdez. Ruben C. Gonzales directs the show with assistant director Cristal Gonzalez Avila. The Musical Directors are Mino Valdez (guitar and Tim Tompkins (Cello). Musicians are: Frances Tompkins (Violin), Emiliano Valdez and Elias DeLeon (Guitar), Daniel Valdez (Percussion) and Noe Montoya (Native Instruments). The musicians accompany the singers and dancers throughout the mission to enhance the action during the show. Vocal director for the production is Lupita Ortiz. The choreographer is Janet Johns, Founder & Artistic Director of Esparanze del Valle Baile Folcorico. Costumer for the production is Amie Oyervides.
