Joey DeFrancesco + The People

Joey DeFrancesco is the first name that comes to mind for many when they think of jazz organists. A native son of Philadelphia, DeFrancesco was playing gigs by the time he was ten—alongside “Philly” Joe Jonas and Hank Mobley, no less—and got his first record deal at the age of sixteen. After playing piano with Miles Davis’ band he switched over the organ and has become one of the instrument’s most acclaimed ambassadors and lauded players. Capable of switching from hauntingly beautiful ballads to all-out swing on a dime, he has won the DownBeat Magazine’s Critics and Readers polls in the organ category every year since 2002 and has racked up Jazz Journalist awards among countless others. His forthcoming new Joey DeFrancesco + The People album Project Freedom shines a light on peace and spirituality.
