About Joe Lovano Classic Quartet

Joe Lovano is a true, modern-day legend of the tenor saxophone. He learned the ropes from his father—a saxophonist who taught his son how to play a standard as well as lead a band, which he took to naturally—while growing up in Cleveland. His studies and ability soon led to formative gigs with Woody Herman’s Orchestra and Mel Lewis’ Big Band. In the 1980s Lovano started to gain traction as a leader within a more avant-garde movement—often playing alongside Paul Motian and Bill Frisell—and his stature within the jazz community has only continued to rise. His latest album, Classic! Live at Newport was released last year, though it presents a live set from 2005 featuring pianist Hank Jones. This album and Lovano’s evergreen tone and musicianship is highlighted with his classic quartet.
