About Jane Bunnett & Maqueque

Jane Bunnett – the intrepid soprano saxophonist/flautist from Canada – is a musical adventurer of the highest order. Her current group Maqueque (pronounced mah-keh-keh) features five incredible musicians from Cuba: Danae, on piano; Yusa, on tres guitar and fretless bass; Daymé Arceno, on percussion; Magdelys on batás, congas; and virtuoso drummer Yissy García. All of the women are strong vocalists in addition to being highly accomplished instrumentalists. From laid-back ballads to driving montunos, Maqueque delivers a stunning performance. Appropriately, their current CD is called Jane Bunnett and Maqueque. A follow up recording, Oddara, is set for release later this year. Since 1982, Bunnett has been making forays into Cuba to seek out local musicians and immerse herself in the folkloric culture of the island. Over the ensuing years, she has introduced a number of incredibly talented Cuban performers to North America, including Pedrito Martinez, David Virelles, Yosvanny Terry, and Dafnis Prieto. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed—Bunnett has been the recipient of The Order of Canada, two Grammy nominations, and four of Canada's JUNO Awards (in music). Aside from her Cuban projects, Jane has collaborated with numerous top American jazz musicians, including Dewey Redman, Don Pullen, Paul Bley, Stanley Cowell, and Sheila Jordan. Today, she continues to blaze a creative pathway forward in jazz with brilliant new projects.
