About In the Fullness of the Moon: Artwork of Hildy Bernstein, Masayuki Watanabe, Gerow Reece

The work of these three artists has the common thread of the tea aesthetic of Japan. This suggests an appreciation of unvarnished essence- expressing the most with the least. The result is image, vessel and word capturing the immediacy of the moment.

About the artists’ work:
Bernstein’s paintings are remembered and imagined landscapes- atmospheric and evocative. Whether in long vertical or small square format, the viewer is drawn into a subdued richness, an inner landscape uniting spirit and earth.

Watanabe’s ceramics delightfully relate beauty to function. With the modest simplicity of the wabi spirit, his wood-fired pieces strongly express the elemental, the essential.

Reece’s words are written with the “Chinese" calligraphic brush, which is far more expressive than pen or even pencil. So whether Chinese ideographs or English words, the resulting forms exude a vitality scarcely seen in any western writing. The lines not only dance; they vivify the space all around them.
