Homeless Garden Project Fall Sustain Supper
Remarks by Nikiko Masumoto
On Saturday September 15, the Homeless Garden Project will host its Fall Sustain Supper, a farm to table dinner to benefit its education and training programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. The 3:30– 7:00 pm supper will be held on the Homeless Garden Project’s Natural Bridges organic farm, located at Delaware Ave and Shaffer Rd. Well-known local chefs, using produce from the farm, will prepare the 4-course gourmet meal.
Keynote speaker: Farmer, artist, and leader, Nikiko works alongside her father to raise organic peaches, nectarines and grapes. She hopes to add another generation’s voice to the story of the Masumoto Family Farm. She calls herself an “agrarian artist” cultivating the richness of life in the Central Valley through farming, food, stories, art, & community.
In 2013 Nikiko published her first book The Perfect Peach (Ten Speed Press), co-authored with Marcy & David Mas Masumoto. She and Mas co-wrote, Changing Season: A Father, A Daughter, A Family Farm published by Heyday in 2016.
Marci Carl of Suda will prepare the entree. Jeffrey Wall of the new restaurant, Alderwood, will offer an oyster bar during the appetizer course. A sophisticated new fine dining restaurant, Alderwood is set to open in downtown Santa Cruz this fall. Andrea Mollenauer of Lifestyle Culinary Arts, Justin Williams and Danny Mendoza of Kickin Chicken, and Anna Bartolini of La Balena in Carmel complete the line up.
The evening will feature a tour of the site, interesting talks, live music, and beverages from local purveyors.
Tickets for the September 15, 2018 Sustain Supper benefiting Homeless Garden Project’s programs are $150 and are available at www.homelessgardenproject.org. If you are interested in volunteering at the event, please contact Justin Wright, Volunteer and Intern Coordinator, at [email protected].
By attending the Sustain Supper, guests will be helping to support trainees in transforming their lives and gaining the skills they need to build their home in the world.
