About From the Sea to the Stars

Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space and the only woman astronaut to explore the ocean depths in a deep-sea submersible, will give a Rio Theatre talk on Oct. 11—the 33rd anniversary of her historic spacewalk—as a benefit for the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History.

Titled “From the Sea to the Stars,” the lecture will explore Dr. Sullivan’s groundbreaking career on the frontiers of science, as a member of three NASA space shuttle missions and later as chief scientist and administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Through a collection of photos and videos, Dr. Sullivan, a geologist and oceanographer by training, will explore what sparked her interest in the sciences, which began at UCSC before earning her Ph.D. in Geology from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. One of six women to join NASA’s astronaut corps in 1978, Dr. Sullivan had a 15-year career at NASA that included a 1990 mission to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope.
