Ed Penniman Figurative Landscapes
About Ed Penniman Figurative Landscapes
Penniman is showing a new body of work called Figurative Landscapes Month of September.
Figurative landscapes.
This artwork is a natural evolvement of my interest in landscape painting and figurative art. The embedded image is of interest to me as is the delicate balance between the literal and the obscure. Not a surreal presentation, per se, but one that requires more engagement by the viewer. With this experimental body of work I play with integrating landscape painting and figure painting.
I feel good about combining the landscape and the figurative to create a new expression in my art. I appreciate and enjoy creating these paintings that include and integrate both subjects.
Often when I am doing figure painting I see suggestion of forms that remind me of California hills. Conversely, in the natural landscape I see sensual forms echoing the female figure. I find atmosphere and sensuality in both genre and have combined them here in this new experimental body of work.
I enjoy composing this type painting. I am successful when I find a visual that achieves a perfect balance between the two genres. I also like the way the mind of the viewer discovers the human form in that “Ah ha!” moment. Once the image reveals itself then it becomes obvious. Consequently the viewer can “replay” and enjoy the visual dance by then going back and forth between figure and landscape.
