Community Group Book Discussion
About Community Group Book Discussion
Bookshop Santa Cruz is celebrating the publication of a newly discovered novel from Harper Lee, the beloved, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird with two special events--a film screening and discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird (July 14) and a community book group discussion of both To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman.
Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014. Go Set a Watchman--which features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later--will be released on July 14.
After reading Go Set a Watchman, join us for a community book group discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman together to better understand how these two works relate. Does the new book live up to the status of To Kill a Mockingbird? Publishers decided not to publish Go Set a Watchman when they first read it in the 1950s. Was that a mistake? Do you end up with a better understanding of Scout and the issues raised in To Kill a Mockingbird by reading the new book? Julie Minnis, former high school literature teacher, avid To Kill a Mockingbird fan, and facilitator for many Bookshop community reads discussions, will facilitate the conversation and questions brought up by Bookshop customers.
