About Become a Docent at the Seymour Center!
Work in the Seymour Center's visitor hall and bring the excitement and importance of marine science to life for thousands of visitors a year! Join our volunteer team as a docent and lead 30 or 45-minute tours of the Seymour Center and Long Marine Lab research facilities, work at the seawater touch pools, interpret the aquarium, and much more!
Applications are due on or before Friday, January 4, 2019, and will be reviewed. Selected candidates will be contacted for an interview for admission into the volunteer program. To apply, download an application form at seymourcenter.ucsc.edu. Docents must be at least 18 years old by the start of training in mid-January 2019.
Training for the docent volunteer position will take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from January-March 2019. New volunteers work one shift every-other-week for one year after completion of training (including the summer months). Shift times are Tuesday-Sunday, 9:30 AM-1:45PM (morning shift) and 1-5:15 PM (afternoon shift).? Volunteers are responsible for arranging coverage for missed shifts (planned absences such as vacations, appointments, work or school commitments) by arranging a sub or shift trade. Volunteers are able to change regular shift times each quarter to accommodate changes in work or class schedules.
