About Amina Figarova

Pianist/composer Amina Figarova is another wonderful example of the far-reaching influence America's jazz heritage has around the world. A native of the former Soviet state of Azerbaijan, Amina grew up listening to jazz, especially the music of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald her parents loved. Although her early training centered on classical music, by the time she entered college, playing jazz had become her main priority. A prolific composer, Figarova likes to incorporate a plethora of styles into her music, utilizing jazz, funk, reggae, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian influences to express herself. Two of her compositions, Pictures and The Traveler, were commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center for its 2014-2015 New Jazz Standards series. She has performed with James Moody, Claudio Roditi and Wynard Harper. Normally leading a septet, she tours internationally, playing at venues all over the globe: New York's Blue Note, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Capetown International Jazz Festival, and concerts in Europe, Israel, North Africa, and Mexico.
