Pianist Aaron Goldberg is keenly devoted to a basic tenet of jazz — improvising in the moment. He believes, as most jazz artists do, that each performance should be unique with no two concerts the same. Even the title of his latest recording, The Now, reflects this outlook. An alumnus of vocal legend Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program, Goldberg has worked with Freddie Hubbard, Nicholas Payton, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and many other top players. As the leader of his own trio he digs deep into the jazz essentials of blues and soulfully rendered standards, incorporating Brazilian and Afro-Cuban selections to broaden the sonic palette and rhythmic variety. Years ago, when drum legend Shelly Manne wryly quipped, “The definition of a jazz musician is somebody who never plays anything the same way once,” he wasn’t kidding. Neither is Aaron Goldberg.
