About 40 Odd Moves: Solos and Other Entertainments!
Celebrating 40 years crafting original projects in dance, theater, circus, music and education, world-renowned Tandy Beal and Company kicks off the 2015 season with 40 Odd Moves: Solos and Other Entertainments! Company co-founder, Tandy Beal’s first local solo concert in 10 years.
The show will take place Friday, Jan. 30 – Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Cabrillo Crocker Theater in Aptos. Tickets are on sale now.
Featuring music videos by Denise Gallant and Brazilian filmmaker Antonio Luiz Mendez, signature productions by the Company, including Crazy Jane, Mysterious Barricades or the Plot without Thickener and The Place Where Canaries are Born will be shown alongside brand new works.
“After making huge concerts with three leveled sets, four projectors, and 45 cast members, Tandy simply wanted to put her hand back in the socket and re-engage with art without such gigantic puzzle-solving. Just getting rehearsal scheduled with that many people is a challenge,” explains Jennifer Radakovich, Programs Manager in an email. “This concert, 40 Odd Moves, invites Jon and Tandy to re-enter a spirit of fun and the joyfulness of making work together.”
With Beal’s moving images that blend dance, circus and theater together with Company co-founder and composer Jon Scoville’s original score, their work together is a web of ideas and images—a kinetic and conceptual palette of illusions and allusions combining the serious and the humorous.
Tandy Beal and Company have produced and performed innovative, multi-arts concerts for adults and children of all ages for 40 years, bringing world-renowned artists to area schools, 48 states and the world to share in the wonder of Tandy Beal’s joyous imagination and skill.
Locally, a generation of students grew up watching and being inspired by performances given by Tandy Beal & Company – and the New Pickle Family Circus, the San Francisco troupe Tandy Beal ran in the 1990s – in local school auditoriums, community halls and parks.
“I had art access all through my upbringing…I was lucky. Perhaps the greatest value in having art experiences (especially early) is that when one expands the imagination, it helps us think in new ways when we are called upon, as we all are at some point, to re-invent ourselves,” says Tandy Beal.
For the first time ever, next year Tandy Beal and Company will hold a series of family-friendly concerts the first Saturday of each month at the Santa Cruz Veterans Memorial Building in downtown Santa Cruz. The concerts will feature Bay Area artists in music, dance and the circus-arts.
“We wanted to make sure the public got a change to see and hear these wonderful artists,” says Radakovich.
Family concerts start on February 7 at 11:00 a.m. with the doors opening at 10:00 a.m.
