A Big Chill in SC Mtn Vineyards

On a foggy August morning at the Bailey’s Branciforte Ridge vineyard, Jeff Emery gently holds a cluster of pulverized grapes in his palm. They look like a miniature unripe version of the picked-over batch that sat in the refrigerator for too long: some of the berries are large, some are the size of BBs and others are barely visible.

Young Paddleboarders Cross Bay

A crew of junior guards by the name of Team Grom stood out at this year’s Bay Crossing, a 28.5-mile paddle race that is usually dominated by broad-shouldered men. Team Grom included the youngest paddlers ever to participate in the three-year-old race: Ben Coffey, 13; Turner Roll, 16; Paul Steinberg, 22 and the only female in the race, Mckenzie Smith, 15. They took turns every 10 to 30 minutes paddling a 12 -foot stock board across Monterey Bay, where every so often people get called out of the water because a great white gets spotted and where whales the size of trucks linger.

Based on the failed marriage of writer and composer Jason Robert Brown, The Last Five Years is a painfully realistic portrait of a relationship running its course. From the opening song, “Still Hurting,” to the final scene’s goodbyes, Cabrillo Stage’s production of the Tony Award-winning one-act musical keeps the audience feeling connected, enough so that on opening night, viewers rewarded the cast with a standing ovation.
