Bike Distribution Program Under New Management

Until about six months ago, Santa Cruz Police took bikes that were deemed abandoned or stolen and gave them to organizations like the Bike Church. Steve Schnaar, a Bike Church member, found that police recently decided to instead entrust The Bike Dojo, a downtown business, with the distributions—partly a cost-saving measure according to the police department.

It looks like a tomato. It’s red and round and a little sweet, with a bitter, savory aftertaste. Underneath its thin skin is fish DNA to prevent it from freezing prior to harvest. Is it a tomato? Mary Graydon-Fontana wouldn’t say so. “I don’t think that’s a tomato,” she says. “That’s a different species that they’re taking it from.”

County Treasurer Reacts to Interest Rate-Rigging

A massive bank-rigging scandal that sent shockwaves around the world is making for a little change in business n the Monterey Bay. Santa Cruz County Treasurer Fred Keeley announced today that he is severing the county government’s financial ties to Barclays, the British Bank that last week was featured front and center in a scathing report by Britain’s Treasury Select Committee regarding the massive interest rate fiasco.

Tess Dunn Headlines Cystic Fibrosis Benefit

At 17, Tess Dunn, who finished up high school a year early so she could leave Santa Cruz, has already accomplished a lot. She’s released two EPs, performed on four Warped Tours and been featured on the Vans Off the Wall Pass the Bucket show online. She’s done all this in spite of three incurable diseases. And before she leaves for CSUMB, Dunn will also be headlining Moe’s Alley on Aug. 12 for a benefit for one of those diseases, cystic fibrosis.

Now he’s making up for lost time. “It’s almost like this slingshot thing,” Mollner says. “After years of resisting and being afraid to call myself a dancer, there’s all this pent-up energy. I’ve been holding back for so long.”

Disc Golf Fest Comes to City Park

Anyone who wants to learn the mechanics of throwing a golf disc or maybe even meet a professional who does just that for a living might find Saturday to be their lucky day. The city has built a 9-hole disc golf course on the former site of the Occupy village in San Lorenzo Park and is throwing a party to introduce the sport.
