Ever since he got his first taste of wizardry at Hogwarts, Harry Potter and his friends have been pitted in a struggle to the death against the Dark Lord (whose name shall not be mentioned). They met one last time at midnight Friday in the epic Final Battle, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Fans around the country rushed to theaters to see the Boy Who Lived take on his mortal enemy. Many came armed with wands, not wanting to risk an encounter with Tom Marvolo Riddle without adequate defenses against the Dark Arts.

The District Attorney’s office says that Eric Rsel Weers will appear in court today to be charged with the murder of Ana Barajas.

Police have identified the victim of Monday’s fatal crash on Highway 17 as Ana Luz Barajas, 48.
The Dogs Are Back in Town
“Who let the dogs out?” The Santa Cruz city council, of course. At its weekly meeting on Tuesday, the council voted 4-2 to lift the 30-year ban on dogs downtown on a three-month trial basis. A final reading of the new ordinance is scheduled for July 26, and the ban will be lifted 30 days later.
CHP: Highway 17 Collision Intentional
Police say a head-on collision on Highway 17, which left one woman dead, was intentional. “There was an element of premeditation,” said Highway Patrol officer Sarah Jackson. Eric Weers, 29, of Soquel, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Santa Cruz Council Mulls Dog-Friendly Downtown
When City Council meets on Tuesday, it will decide whether to overturn the infamous dog ban, which prevented owners from bringing their pets to downtown Santa Cruz. The ban, which has been in place for over three decades, would be overturned for a three-month trial period. If the council does not repeal it, it will become permanent on Nov. 1.
Two Dead in Airplane Crash Into Hospital
Two people were killed when a four-seater airplane barreled into the Watsonville Community Hospital on Thursday evening. The single engine Mooney, which took off from Watsonville Municipal Airport, was struggling to get above the fog line when it crashed. The victims were the pilot and a passenger.

Police were called to a Watsonville home after a shot was heard at 5:30pm Wednesday.
Woman Killed in Skateboarding Accident in Capitola Village
Skateboarding is banned in Capitola Village, but not everyone abides by this rule. On Wednesday afternoon, a 17-year-old aficionado was barreling down the Cliff Drive hill in the direction of the Stockton Avenue bridge at 20 miles per hour. Just then, Maryanne Slettehaugh, 83, was crossing the street. The teen saw her and leapt from his board, but flew into Slettehaugh, knocking her down. Police say that she died of her injuries.

Back in 1935, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), working in Oregon, crossed two popular berries, the loganberry and the youngberry, and came up with a new berry they named the olallie, Chinook jargon for “berry.”
