The Tannery Arts Center is holding a special daylong event of exhibitions, performances, curator’s talk, dance workshops and art demonstrations on June 21.

The all ages event is free and celebrates the ongoing transformation of the former leather factory into a mixed-use housing and art campus.

Tanniversary will feature the artwork of more than 65 artists working in a variety of mediums from glass and ceramics to film and design.

Camp Tannery Arts will lead a scavenger hunt, collecting art and art-making objects throughout the campus and The Arts Council will announce the scholarship recipients of the California State Summer School for the Arts.

Three stages will feature a wide swath of performances by Diaspora Dance Company, Malima Salif Kone, Shamma Mama, Sweet Jam, Committee of Elders, Tan of Dreams, George Orwell and more.

Salz Tannery operated at the site where Pogonip Creek meets the San Lorenzo River for more than 145 years before closing in 2001. The tannery was developed into an art campus by the City of Santa Cruz, Artspace Inc, and the Tannery Arts Center. One hundred units of affordable housing for artists and their families opened in 2009. In 2012, two historic buildings opened with 25,000 sq. feet dedicated to working studios. In 2013, the Arts Council Santa Cruz County moved their office into the Kron House.  The historic Hide House will be preserved and transformed into the Hide House Theater, while a planned Performing Arts Center will be a state-of-the-art, affordable venue for drama, music and dance.

Tanniversary is on June 21, 3:00 p.m. to midnight at the Tannery Arts Center at 1050 River St., Santa Cruz.

watch out that the John Stewart Company doesn’t tow your car at a cost of $450-600. They screwed about 50 people at one of their other tannery openings. Be careful where you PARK!
