Summer Movies at the Boardwalk

Who needs giant, exploding balls of gas when there are Hollywood stars to gaze at? The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s free movies on the beach start this Wednesday. This year’s films are all modern coming-of-age classics that are all, we must add, highly quotable.

July 11The Lost Boys

Eat your heart out, Twilight—celebrate your hometown pride with the greatest cult classic vampire flick of all time. The scenery’s not bad, either.

“Maggots, Michael. You’re eating maggots. How do they taste?”

July 18: Grease

While nothing can compare to the seminal, Oscar-winning classic, Grease 2, this one’s not bad. Summer lovin’, anyone?

“Tell me about it, stud.”

July 25: The Princess Bride

A classic fairy tale—complete with a quest, love story and even a six-fingered man.

“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

August 1: The Sandlot

For anyone who needs a dose of bravery—go ahead! Hop that fence, kiss that girl, now is the time. And for the love of god, don’t show up without knowing who Babe Ruth is.

“S’more? Some more of what?”

August 8: Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

It’s summertime, school’s out! In honor of Ferris and the gang, we implore you to spend the day gallivanting around town in a stolen car.

“We’d like to play a little tune for you. It’s one of my personal favorites and I’d like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn’t think he’s seen anything good today.”

August 15: Goonies

A word of warning to those who arrive at the beach early:

“You know, if you sit too close to the TV you’re going to hurt your eyes.”

Showings begin at 9pm and seating is first-come, first-served, so roll up early with a blanket, Frisbee and picnic to make an evening of it. Visit www.beachboardwalk.com/movies/ for more information.
