Slightly Stoopid

This has been a contentious and stressful year, but the healing power of music is something we can all agree on. This week might be a good time to spend an evening or two in your community listening to some great artists—luckily we have some truly amazing artists to choose from.

Slightly Stoopid at The Catalyst Club Mainstage

A decade after their breakout album “Closer to the Sun” dominated every chart and radio station from reggae to blues, Slightly Stoopid are still the masters of the “Stealth Groove”. Back in 1996, before their breakout album, they caught the attention of the father of the genre himself—Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell, who signed them to Skunk Records. Just like their hometown of San Diego, their warm weather- and surf vibe-filled music seems to slide through almost any genre, festival, or earhole and instantly become the belle of the ball. Presale tickets for this show are sold out, but we would pay the extra StubHub dollars or get in line early to catch this beloved group.

Miss Lonely Hearts, McCoy Tyler & The Moonlighters and The Naked Bootleggers Triple Header at Moe’s Alley

A true Double Header where both bands are equally as awesome and loved by the crowd is a rare find. It is a worthwhile spectacle that leaves one with the feeling both bands deserved that number one spot. So you can imagine our excitement when we discovered not only two heads, but an elusive Triple Headed Musical Beast that is Miss Lonely Hearts, McCoy Tyler & The Moonlighters and The Naked Bootleggers at Moe’s Alley this Friday. These three bands are all currently at the top of their game, firing on all musical cylinders, and generally killing it all aspects of their careers. Just about every string instrument from guitar to mandolin will be present at this affair, so bring some dancing shoes and maybe a Power Bar—you’ll need the energy.

Show at 9pm. Tickets $9 in advance/$12 at the door.

Unwritten Law at The Catalyst Club Main Stage

Growing up in San Diego there were tales passed around stereo systems at night spoken of in hushed voices over CD players and Walkmans. The subject: Crazy Poway Kids, AKA CPK. Legend had it that this small suburb located inland of Del Mar in Southern California was home to a lawless band of skaters, BMX bikes and the best house shows south of L.A. While you have may have heard of blink-182 or Box Car Racer, this area also spawned another exciting act in the 2000’s: Unwritten Law. While blink-182 has recently made their comeback debut, Unwritten Law has been carrying the CPK banner with six studio albums, acoustic recordings, and a recent live album, “Live and Lawless”. These guys might be a little older but they still jump around on stage with enough energy and attitude to rival the tweens in the crowd.

Show at 8pm. Tickets $16 at the door.

Garret Klahn and The Surrounding Areas at The Crepe Place

Eighteen years ago a band called Texas is the Reason released a little record called “Do You Know Who You Are?”, a dark and contentiously beautiful Americana/emo album led by Garret Klahn’s somber crooning and effortless guitar picking. Since then the album has become a cult classic, embedded in the emo indie rock history books. In addition to Texas is the Reason, Klahn will be joined on his current tour by titans of the genre Last Days Of April, members of Jets To Brazil, Dashboard Confessional, Christie Front Drive, Mineral, and the Promise Ring. This will be the first time in the 18 years since its release that the band is touring as a whole and playing the album in its entirety.

Show at 9pm. Tickets $8 at the door.
