With all of these “super” voting days and gatherings going on all around the country we thought you might be feeling a little left out, so this week we decided to have a little election of our own. Here are five shows in town this week—a musical caucus, if you will. The event with the most attendees will get to vote twice in the primary. Or something.
Wednesday & Thursday, March 9 & 10
Rebelution at The Catalyst Club
Rebelution’s double header on The Main Stage at The Cat is a far cry from the natural light-soaked UCSB house parties where they got their start. But seeing as they’ve spent the last seven years constantly touring, consistently releasing new material, and perfecting one of the most celebrated live shows in reggae right now, we think they’ll do just fine. The “Too Blessed To Be Stressed” group will be playing two shows this week. Pick one, or both, just make it happen. Tickets $32.50 /$35 at the door
Thursday, March 10
Cheraki and LowGritt Album Release Party at Indigital Recording Studios
While the names might look new, the faces will be familiar to anyone who’s had their ear to street in regards to local music. Cheraki (Heather Christie), who also sings in the local band Feral-Fauna, and local producer/DJ LowGritt (Logan Gritton) have joined forces on a new project entitled “Shades of She.” This indie/electronic/Neo-Soul amalgamation is truly unique, and will be played live for one of the first few times alongside other local DJs and producers at their album release party this Thursday. Tickets $8
Friday, March 11
Andre Nickatina at The Catalyst Club
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Andre Nickatina at The Catalyst is something that truly needs to be experienced. This Bay Area rap legend sells out the main stage nearly every time he has come to town, despite not having a wide release in almost a decade, and elicits a response from the Santa Cruz crowd that is truly electric. Bring some backwoods and get down. Tickets $23 adv/$25 at the door
Saturday, March 12
Tracey Holland and Chris Tye are just plain cool. Having spent the majority of the last few years grinding up and down the west coast, these two indie kids with a 70’s rock twinge have learned to play off of each other’s vibe and talents, masterfully creating a truly fun live rock and roll singer-songwriter experience. Tickets $10
Saturday, March 12
Del The Funky Homosapien at Moe’s Alley
With eleven solo album releases, incredible work with the Gorillaz, and countless other mixtapes and collaborations since his first release in 1991(and with one of the coolest names to boot), Del The Funky Homosapien is arguably the most famous “non-famous” Emcee in hip-hop right now. Come and witness the skill of someone who has spent the last 25 years creating and performing. You won’t regret it.
