Q&A: Paula Poundstone

Paula Poundstone's shoes have been writing her jokes for years.

Poundstone rose out of the stand-up scene in Boston, and came to national attention with her TV appearances and award-winning HBO special in the late ’80s. These days, she is a frequent panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, an avowed asexual and an unapologetic crazy cat lady. We caught up her via a phone interview as she prepares to perform at the Rio on Friday, March 1, 2013.

Songwriter Contest Kicks Off Another Year

On evenings throughout February and March, dozens of fans will flood the pub, just as they do every year. Club Kuumbwa Aims for Young Crowds

The Dahls will kick of 'Club Kuumbwa' Feb. 8.

The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is the kind of space artists dream about playing. It’s classy and intimate, with top-notch sound and lighting. But if your band can’t draw 200 people at $25 a ticket, chances are pretty slim Kuumbwa has booked you. This is changing, however, with a new monthly series called “Club Kuumbwa” which aims to specifically bring in smaller local and indie bands.

Hermit Convention Switches Sounds

The latest album by Craig Prentice’s one-man-band Hermit Convention, Cough Syrup Coffins, is his most experimental record to date—which is to say that it was recorded in an actual studio, with drums, guitar and backing vocals. For a guy whose previous low-fi recordings had him singing to bass guitar loops in his bedroom, this is wacky stuff.
