Atlanta-based singer-songwriter, Cat Power will be coming to Santa Cruz on Labor Day weekend, performing at The Rio on Friday, September 4, as part of a whirlwind summer tour that will also include shows in Reno, Sonoma and Solana Beach.

Presented by folkYEAH! Tickets for the Rio and Sonoma shows go on sale at Noon on July 31.

With a sound that critics describe as a mix of “punk, folk, and blues,” Cat Power is not afraid to broach new musical genres, her latest album, Sun, released in 2012, incorporates the use of electronica.

A largely self-taught musician, Cat Power (real name: Charlyn Marie Marshall) has released a total of nine albums, spanning a career that started in 1994 when Sonic Youth drummer, Steve Shelley, discovered her opening for Liz Phair.

Over the years, Cat Power has collaborated with a wide range of artists as her sound has constantly evolved. She has worked with musicians such as Yoko Ono, Faithless, Beck, Eddie Vedder and Mick Collins of The Dirtbombs.

Her online biography relates how her grandmother was very religious and would take Marshall to church where she would sing the hymns. As Cat Power’s sound has evolved, the influence of those early years are noticeable in her soulful and honest compositions.

Fans of all ages can expect a lively show from Cat Power, as she is known for her confidence and enthusiasm on stage.

Making her way through Reno, Sonoma, Santa Cruz, and Solana Beach within the first six days of September, expect tickets to sell fast.
