This week’s musical offerings provide a little something for everyone and then some—a

folk surfer/songwriter, a top 40 dirty south rapper, a Tony Award-winning musical, and

one of the biggest Brazilian festival bands anywhere.

 

Wednesday, May 18

Little Wings at The Crepe Place

Kyle Fields is the son of an Alabama football coach that who headed west and started

the group Little Wings while he was attending school in San Luis Obispo. Fields has

been the group’s only permanent member through 11 albums since 2011. His practiced

finger-picking creates catchy surf/folk melodies in his simple, often acoustic songs,

accompanied by interesting lyrics and haunting vocals that bring to mind eerie fog and

the soaked beaches that he likes to surf during his mornings in San Francisco.

Thursday, May 19

Young Thug at The Catalyst

Atlanta, Georgia is a hotbed for some of the most famous and talented rappers in hip-

hop. The youngest of 11 children, Jeffrey Williams, stage name: Young Thug, was well-

versed when he burst on the scene three years ago, and stood out from the crowd. With

“1017 Thug,” his first major project, Williams gave his listeners a snapshot of the drugs,

violence, and crime that surrounded him, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has

worked with some of the biggest artists in the industry and amassed a huge digital

following. This show is an opportunity to get some authentic Southern flavor without

having to go farther than downtown.

Friday, May 20

Billy Elliot (The Musical) at The Rio

If you’re saying to yourself, “Wait a second, a musical isn’t really live music, “ you’re

wrong, and you probably haven’t seen a top notch musical live and in its glory on the

stage. This isn’t like your little cousin’s “Nutcracker.” Based on the 2000 film by the same

name, “Billy Elliot” is a musical that has sold out shows to millions of fans, famous for

ending in standing ovations and its 10 Tony award nominations. This is one of the best

shows around.

Saturday, May 21st

SambaDá at Moe’s Alley

Since forming in Santa Cruz in 1998, SambaDá has gone on to become perhaps the

West Coast’s hottest Brazilian band. SambaDá has traveled the globe, working with

Grammy-nominated producers, playing some of the biggest festivals in the world, and

adding members and musical influence at every step along their journey. SambaDá has

created a musical melting pot that is insanely fun to watch, and even more fun to join in

with—better bring those dancing shoes.
