Hummingbirds are feted at the UCSC Arboretum this weekend.
PAULA POUNDSTONE
Best known in recent years for her appearances on NPR’s “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me,” Paula Poundstone has made a name for herself with her quick improv and sharp wit on comedy specials on HBO and Bravo. And as Jacob Pierce says, “The 53-year-old performer has the hair of Sigourney Weaver, a face like Rosie O’Donnell’s, the colorful suits of Andre 3000 and a voice that’s somewhere in between Christopher Walken and Tom Waits.” If that’s not a winning combination, I don’t know what is. https://www.santacruz.com/paula-poundstone-e1849242
THE MOTHER HIPS
Since 2009, the Mother Hips have co-curated Hipnic, a psych-rock and folk concert series in the forests of Big Sur Valley, but the indie outfit has been making its own grooves since 1990. Local favorites in the Bay Area music scene, the band gained more widespread acclaim with a song on Rock Band in 2007. The Mother Hips is a band that has built a long-lasting career from the bottom up. https://www.santacruz.com/the-mother-hips-e1847812
A MUSICAL CELEBRATION OF JOHN STEINBECK
Celebrate the life and times of John Steinbeck as part of “The Big Read” happening in Santa Cruz for the next month sponsored by Santa Cruz Reads. The project encourages members of the community to engage in literature through art, music, theater, lectures and, yes, reading. This year’s selection is The Grapes of Wrath. So get ready for lots of fun stuff about the Great Depression. https://www.santacruz.com/performance-a-musical-celebration-of-the-life-and-times-of-john-steinbeck-e1835402
AGAVE AGAPE
The fourth annual “Agave Agape: Tapas and Tequila Tasting Fundraiser” comes to the MAH to benefit the women, children and families served by the Walnut Avenue Women’s Center. Guests will be able to pair award-winning tequilas with samples from local restaurants while perusing all the museum’s exhibits, enjoying live entertainment, and bidding in the silent auction. https://www.santacruz.com/agave-agape-tapas-and-tequila-tasting-fundraiser-e1847961
HUMMINGBIRD DAYS
Celebrate the smallest, zippiest and only backward-flying birds rain or shine at the UCSC Arboretum. The weekend festival offers bird watching and garden tours, artist exhibits, and family friendly crafts and activities. Food, plants and souvenirs for sale, but the sweeping views and use of the picnic table are free. https://www.santacruz.com/hummingbird-days-e1835292
