A musical proverb for you this week…

For want of a weekly, the patron was lost.

For want of a patron, the show was lost.

For want of a show, the band was lost.

For want of a band, the venue was lost.

For want of a venue, the music was lost.

For want of the music, the kingdom was lost.

And all for the want of a weekly music article.

Gold Panda at The Catalyst Atrium

Coming to Santa Cruz all the way from his London-based lair is the trailblazing and internationally acclaimed producer Gold Panda. Although he’s been around since bands were still making it on Myspace, not much is known about the man known for making ethereal, catchy, musical journey-inspiring sample based music. Read our interview the man himself before his upcoming show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz to get a little more info on what made this panda so golden in the first place.

Dirt Monkey and Amp Live in The Catalyst Atrium

If you’re looking for a little bass to go with your Thursday night, this hard-hitting double-bill featuring two veterans of the wheels of steel is where you need to be. Dirt Monkey has been making hip-hop inspired electronic music for more than a decade, topping charts like Beatport regularly from his hometown of Boulder, CO. Amp Live is a legend in his local Bay Area and in the national hip-hop scene for his work as one-half of the underground supergroup Zion-I. He has recently struck out on his own, experimenting with some house, mash-ups, and some really tasty remixes.

The Medflys Rare Reunion Show at Moe’s Alley

The Medflys dominated the Monterey music scene in the early 1980s, enjoying local success until their breakout single “Don’t Mess With The Mayor,” a humerous tribute to Clint Eastwood’s 1986 mayoral campaign in Carmel, launched them into the national spotlight. Melding sunny pop, ska and crunchy New Wave-rock with weird, wild and over-the-top on stage theatrics, the five-piece band has kept their fire burning with regional FM-radio hits, like the angsty “Belfast”, groovy dancy hit “Compulsive” and the California lovin’ “State of Mine.” This will be their first reunion show in five years, so don’t miss out on the fun.

Show at 9pm. Tickets $12 in advance/$15 at the door
